PLoP

Mikko Innanen > saxophone
Ville Herrala > double bass
Joonas Riippa > drums

PLOP is a co-operative trio of saxophonist Mikko Innanen, bassist Ville Herrala and drummer Joonas Riippa. The three Finns have a long history of playing together in various constellations, but as PLOP they have existed since 2007.
The music of PLOP is a mixture of original compositions by the individual band members and collective compositions created on the spot a.k.a. free improvisations. They are striving for a warm, acoustic, natural, sometimes supernatural sound and for a deep and swinging yet adventurous rhythm.
Bebop + free bop + blip blop = PLOP.

Mikko Innanen (born 1978) received Finnish Jazz Federations 41st annual Yrjö award, the most prestigious award for a Finnish jazz musician, in November 2008. His current groups include Mikko Innanen & Innkvisitio, Delirium, Gourmet, Stefan Pasborg´s Odessa 5, Mikko Innanen & Mika Kallio Duo, Mikko Innanen - Jaak Sooäär - Han Bennink Trio, Contrasts and Mr Fonebone. He has played with John Tchicai, Ingrid Jensen, Joe Fonda, Lou Grassi, Herb Robertson, Kalle Kalima, Nuijamiehet, Daniel Erdmann, Magnus Broo, Fredrik Ljungkvist, Anders Bergcrantz, Ulf Krokfors, Iro Haarla, Laurent Blondiau, Triade, Ibrahim Electric, UMO Jazz Orchestra, Zanussi Five, Dayna Stephens, André Sumelius, Teddy Rok 7, Liudas Mockunas, Severi Pyysalo, Ingebrigt Haaker Flaten, Pierre Dorge & The New Jungle Orchestra, Paul Nilssen-Love, Juhani Aaltonen and many others, making him one of the most active Finnish jazzmen on the international scene at the moment.

Ville Herrala (born 1979) is currently one of the three most in-demand acoustic jazz bassists in Finland – and rightly so. He is playing in such groups as Tokka, Mikko Hassinen Muuntaja, Joonatan Rautio Trio, Reactor-5, Teemu Mattsson Quintet, Korma, How Many Sisters, Jussi Fredriksson Trio and Päivinen-Tapio Quintet. He has also performed with Jukka Perko, Eero Koivistoinen, Jukkis Uotila, Phil Markowitz, Samuli Mikkonen, Piirpauke, Jerry Bergonzi, Magnus Broo, Lasse Lindgren Big Band, UMO Jazz Orchestra and U-Street All Stars.

Joonas Riippa (born 1977) is the favourite drummer of many of the leading musicians on the Finnish scene. The most musical and unselfish drummer, he always plays for the band and for the music yet in his very own way.
At the moment his regular working bands include Mikko Innanen & Innkvisitio, Viinikainen-Kannaste-Riippa, Verneri Pohjola Aurora, Warp!, Verneri Pohjola & Joonas Riippa Duo, Kannaste-Olding Quartet, Cesterius, Kahden miehen galaksi, Markus Holkko Quartet and Joonatan Rautio Trio. He has also played with Juhani Aaltonen, Mats Gustafsson, Sten Sandell, Magnus Broo, Charles Tolliver, UMO Jazz Orchestra, Lenny Pickett, Pepa Päivinen and Jouni Järvelä. Riippa, like the other two members of the trio are alumni of the Sibelius Academy Jazz Department.
