The ARFI present its new film-concert in Finland, Estonia and Latvia. The Lyon based company (Association searching an imaginary folkore) has succeeded in combining colorful brass music and the poetical grotesque movies of George Méliès. At the occasion of this tour, the brass trio the Arsonists celebrates its brand new record.
Most cinema-goers in the west are familiar with the 1960s films of Mr Hulo and his Holdays, but few know of the visual trickery of early French film-maker Georges Méliès. Working at the turn of the century, Méliès’ early studios pioneered many cinematographic methods that became standard skills of the trade. ‘Journey to the Moon’ of 1902 featured just such visual sequences that were seen across Europe and the USA, and his works are praised by artists from Walt Disney to Terry Gillam.
The music collective ARFI, based in Lyons, have worked with many theatrical and cinematographic projects before, combining jazz-based virtuosity with various forms of presentation. This show features three instrumentalists in a live accompaniment of ten of Méliès’ works.
