One doesn’t come across albums like ’Approaching’ too often. In fact, the latest Finnish record in this discipline is Edward Vesala’s timeless manifesto ’I’m here’ from three decades ago. So one might even say that it was about time a percussionist from Finland made a solo album that’s based on uninhibited self-expression.
For this task there really is no better man than Janne Tuomi. A former apprentice of Vesala’s, an avid admirer of Milford Graves and Elvin Jones and a student of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, he has a deep understanding of the power and possibilities of the oldest instrument in the world.
Janne Tuomi was born in 1973 in Tampere, incidentally the year Vesala’s ’I’m here’ was released. Coming from a family of musicians and music educators, it was only natural that this first-born began playing the piano at the age
of six. But the infatuation was not to last as percussion soon lured him away from the ebonies and ivories.
Tuomi commenced studying at the Conservatory of Tampere in 1995 and further honed his skills at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense, Denmark. After undertaking a study trip to New York City, Tuomi graduated from the
Conservatory in 2000 with honours. In 2001 he travelled to Los Angeles to take private lessons.
During his professional career Tuomi has acted as a free jazz drummer, classical percussonist and everything in between. He has performed with guitarists Antti Kotikoski, Sakari Luoma and Marzi Nyman, saxophonists Daunik Lazro, Jone Takamäki and Jorma Tapio, pianists Iro Haarla and Seppo Kantonen, bass players Ulf Krokfors and Claude Tchamitchian and numerous others.
Jazz and classical aside, the percussionist works with groups like Slobo Horo and Vilddas that specialize in world music. He is also the percussionist of choice for the new duo project of Mika Rättö and Jussi Lehtisalo, the masterminds behind renowned trance rock group Circle.
Apart from recording and performing various styles of music with a burning passion, Tuomi teaches percussion both privately and at the Palmgren Conservatory in Pori. Tuomi is also experienced as a theater musician. To top it all, he has put his skills as a trombonist to good use on e.g. actor/musician Markku Peltola’s 2003 album ’Buster Keatonin ratsutilalla’.
All in all, the fourth year of the new Millennium promises to be busy and exciting for Janne Tuomi: In addition to ‘Approaching’ he is featured on the upcoming album by Suurin Onni, an improvising collective he co-founded with
trombonist/pianist Kusti Vuorinen in 2000.

Ei mitään turhanaikaista kolistelua. Janne Tuomi on monipuolinen lyömäsoittaja, joka on yhtä hyvin kotonaan niin
free jazzin parissa kuin sinfoniaorkestereiden rivistöissä. Tältä taustalta ei olekaan mikään ihme, että hän on tehnyt monipuolisen ja kiinnostavan soololevyn, jolla rumpusetin ja monien eri lyömäsoitinten lisäväreinä on ainoastaan taskutrumpetti ja ihmisääni. Äkkiseltään tuollainen yhdistelmä saattaisi vaikuttaa tylsältä, mutta ei: Tuomella on musiikissaan ideaa ja ajatusta. 35-minuuttisen kuuntelurupeaman aikana ei ehdi kyllästymään, päinvastoin se hurahtaa hetkessä ohi ja lisää jää kaipaamaan. Onnistunutta lopputulosta korostaa vielä se, että kaikki on laitettu suorana purkkiin, päällekkäisäänityksiä tai editointeja ei ole tehty.

Janne Tuomi (s.1973, Tampere) aloitti musiikinopiskelun 6-vuotiaana pianolla, josta vaihtoi viuluun vähän myöhemmin. Näiden kokeiluiden jälkeen löytyivät lyömäsoittimet, joiden opiskelu alkoi Tampereen konservatorion
musiikkiopistossa Esko Vuorisen johdolla. Musiikin ammattiopinnot alkoivat vuonna 1995, jolloin mukaan tuli sivusoitin, pasuuna. Vuoden 1998 Tuomi opiskeli Carl Nielsen Academy of Musicissa Tanskassa lyömäsoitinten ja
pasuunan soittoa sekä sävellystä Soren Monradin johdolla. Vuonna 2000 Tuomi suoritti Tampereen konservatoriossa lyömäsoitinten B-kurssitutkinnon parhain mahdollisin arvosanoin.
Janne Tuomi on soittanut lukuisissa jazz-, pop- ja rockyhtyeissä sekä improvisoidun musiikin, etnisen musiikin ja kamarimusiikin kokoonpanoissa. Hänen nykyiset yhtyeensä ovat avant-rockyhtye Circle, näyttelijä/muusikko
Markku Peltolan orkesteri, maailmanmusiikkiorkesteri Slobo Horo, improvisaatiokollektiivit Suurin Onni ja My Point Of You sekä klassista lyömäsoitinmusiikkia esittävä Osuma Ensemble.
Hän on esiintynyt lukuisten suomalaisten ja ulkomaisten huippumuusikoiden kanssa, kuten Alexander Balanescu, Marilyn Mazur, Boris J. Rayskin, Daunik Lazro, Claude Tchamitchian, Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Francois Thuillier, Johannes

kaupunginorkestereissa, Tampere big bandissä ja Tampere Chamberissa sekä Tampereen työväen teatterissa.
Janne Tuomi opettaa Porin Palmgren-konservatoriossa sekä klassisia että pop/jazz –lyömäsoittimia. Lisäksi hän toimii freelance-muusikkona. Tuomi on ollut Tampere Jazz Happeningin taiteellisessa toimikunnassa vuodet 1999-2002
ja on TJH-ystävät ry:n puheenjohtaja.
Vuosina 2003-2004 Tuomi on ryhtynyt luomaan myös soolouraa. Syksyllä 2004 ilmestyi hänen esimmäinen sooloalbuminsa nimeltä Approaching. Levy on saanut sekä Suomessa että kansainvälisessä musiikkilehdistössä erittäin
positiivisen vastaanoton.
Tulevia esiintymisiä mm. Tampere Biennale (huhtikuu 2006) nykymusiikkifestivaaleilla jossa Tuomella on sooloresitaalikonsertti sekä Osuma Ensemblen konsertti.
