Biography of Stephan Oliva and press quotes in English

“VAGUEMENT GODARD”
STEPHAN OLIVA , PIANO

This is the problem. We cannot prevent ourselves from doing it. Whatever we think, we always come back to it. At first we had not even thought about it. There was Ghosts of Bernard Herrmann in 2007 and then Film Noir in 2010. Then we thought that we should make a last one. Another One? Really? Yes, to close the trilogy. Al right, but about what?

First, after throwing out ideas, we thought of the Nouvelle Vague. We worked on it for a few months. But it was not working out. Surprisingly, it was too disparate. Or we did not find what we were looking for. Of course, Godard was here, with us. Insidiously, he imposed himself to us. Here is the trilogy: a cinema musician, a cinematographic genre and a film maker. All dear to our hearts.

Godard, it’s the multiplicity. We are now in our fifties, filled with cinema, and we had seen his production in the 60’s on television and in the theaters of the Quartier Latin in Paris, and again during his comeback in 1979 in the first MK2 movie houses. And his soundtracks that we simply could not get out of our minds …But, in the end, these musical desires came from somewhere else, not too far away.

When in 1997 Stéphane Oskeritzian and I bought Stéphan’s Jazz’n (e)motion, none of us knew each other. But what a slap in the face! It haunted us. Thank you Jean-Jacques. Then we found each other. So here it is: we are now working on (among other one) musical projects based on a previous musical project. So what? One can create from anything. Even nothing! And right now we are creating from what we love. Seriously. And yes, that’s the problem. Because we cannot prevent ourselves from doing it.
